No, it isn't a good idea. You can use always Jrequest::getVar
specifing the type
(http://api.joomla.org/Joomla-Framework/Environment/JRequest.html#getVar).
The allowed types are: INT, FLOAT, BOOLEAN, WORD, ALNUM, CMD, BASE64,
STRING, ARRAY, PATH.
